Japjenica (lime kiln)

Japjenice – lime kilns have been an important source of income for the local population of the island because they have been source of construction binder – lime. During our beautiful kayak tour we are passing near Deralo bay where are located leftovers of an old lime kiln. Japnenice were built only by the best drywall builders because it was necessary to built

Deralo bay which is on our kayak route

Japnenice were built only by the best drywall builders because it was necessary to build a very demanding structure that should not have collapsed before the completion of the combustion, which lasted up to a week without stopping. Skilled builders organized a group, built and burned japnenica and sold lime.

Lime kiln can be seen on NW coast of island Brac

Extremely difficult occupation was poorly rewarded for the owner of japnenica because most of it was taken by shipowners and intermediaries who were solding lime in Split and other coastal cities. In the Pučišća area, the last lime kiln was burning in 1975.
